France is a country primarily located in Western Europe and is the largest economy in the Eurasian Bloc. It has overseas regions and territories around the world, the largest area being in North Africa, and has colonies on Luna, Mars, and several main belt asteroids. It is part of the Eurasian Bloc and has a number of trade and peacekeeping arrangements with Dominio with who it shares a common majority religion (Catholicism) and land borders in Africa and South America (French Guiana with Brazil).
Originally know as the French Republic, during the Reset of Nations it helped fund NRF forces during the establishment and later expansion of the Levantine Republic. In the 170s they began funding massive infrastructure projects in North Africa under their Mediterranean Union scheme, which was branded as a Marshall Plan to rebuild Africa and win over countries that otherwise might join Dominio. In 176 BFC, the Tunisian government defaulted on international debt, triggering austerity measures which lead to mass protests. France negotiated a bailout in exchange for creating joint-governance economic zones in Tunis and Sfax. These zones proved remarkably successful, sparking a similar deal with Libya in 174 BFC.
The Great Maghreb Drought (165-159 BFC) accelerated integration. Mauritania joined in 162 BFC after pastoral collapse and famine. Morocco's 158 BFC referendum passed narrowly (51-49%) despite massive protests in Casablanca and Rabat, where the Istiqlal resistance movement killed over 3000 French personnel before being suppressed. Algeria resisted longest, with pro-integration forces winning elections in 159 BFC but sparking a brutal civil war (159-154 BFC) between the coastal Unionists and interior Independence Brigades until French Foreign Legion intervention ended the conflict. The contentious 155 BFC referendum accepting integration into the union passed under disputed circumstances.
In 142 BFC the nationalistic governance of Armand Delacroix was elected on a platform of incorporating the Mediterranean Union into France. This was effectively already happening, but President Delacroix used the nationalisation of the Union as a part of a strategy of accusing opponents of being separatists. Presiding over a period of great economic growth driven by Fusion Power and integration of the union economies, in 137 BFC he won 408 seats in the assembly and was successful in constitutional amendments to remove term limits and rename the French Republic and Union to simply France. During his third term he was impeached after an attempt to replace the Tricolour with the Imperial (an eagle perched on a globe on a purple background) caused country-wide protests.
Along with Japan, France was the largest funder of the failed Étoile-Kōkai generation ship mission to Epsilon Indi which launched in 95 BFC.
